Make Your Own Calligraphy Tools!

Don't have expensive pens and tools for Calligraphy?
Here's how you can make your own.

When I started calligraphy the first problem I faced was the lack of required tools. So I started searching for best pens in the market and that's how I came to know how expensive these things are.As a beginner no one wants to spend that much money on just a pen which you don't even know how to use,so I started looking for all possible alternatives. Here are some of the ways you can make your own tools out of scratch.

  • Using pencils for practice.
One of my friend at school taught  me this, all you need for this is a pencil and a sharpener.Take a sharpened pencil and hold it on top of your sharpener(on the open side,on the blade). Now gently scratch your pencil on the sharpener so as to make the tip flat. You can use a blade or  x acto knife for this.after you've flattened the sides of your pencil tip, make the tip flat/straight horizontally. And boom! you have your own calligraphy pencil.

  • Using sketch pen
You can apply the same procedure as shown above on the tip of a sketch pen/marker.To flatten the tip of sketch pen you can use pliers after cutting out the excess from the sides. Then you have to chop the tip horizontally and that's it.You have your marker ready for calligraphy!
You can also use 'chisel tip marker' for calligraphy. They are extremely cheap and easily available in the market and also one of the best option to start calligraphy.

  • Using bamboo/wooden stick
Take your bamboo/wooden stick and start pealing the wood with the help of a blade as shown below(make sure you don't cut through the whole thing ).Now turn your stick and peel a little portion to make it flatter. Now when you're happy with the width and thickness you can cut out the tip.To make it easier I keep the stick flat on any surface and I put a straight cut on the tip(you can use a scale if you want).Your custom pen is ready to use.You can use it with ink, colors etc.I personally love this method because you can make pens of any size as per your requirement.

  • Using Flat brush
You can use any flat brush to do calligraphy.I'll recommend to use flat brush after you start understanding methods and techniques of strokes.

These were some of the easiest methods that I use. There are many other ways you can make calligraphy pens using popsicle stick, soda can etc but these methods that I've discussed above gave me the best results.Hope y'all would like my ideas. So now there are no excuses, grab your tools and start doing calligraphy.
